Teachers Unhappy with New H.S. Rules

Teachers at the high school are unhappy with a new set of rules at South Plainfield High School put in place by Superintendent of Schools Jose Negron, who has been supervising there since the beginning of the school year.

The rules require teachers and others to sign in and out, as well as prohibits teachers from entering parts of the main office, including the mail room.

Negron defended the rules during a board meeting on Monday, saying they were required for security.  Meanwhile, members of the SPEA, the local teachers' union, blasted the superintendent for creating a combative atmosphere.

  1. Some of what is written is not true! First, visitors have always had to sign in and out of the school for security purposes. Also, the teachers have always had to sign in. The teachers all have mailbox keys so they dont need to go into the mailroom.
The office is a place filled with confidential information. Why would you want additional people around? What if there was information about your child? Would you want other people to know about it?
Furthermore, any kind of change no matter if it truly is for the better is always difficult for some people especially when they are used to always getting their way!

  2. Let's be honest, it is one member of SPEA that is making a lot of waves.

Rules are rules. In the corporate world, employees are prohibited from entering the CEO's office and work area.

What is the big deal? Maybe if those complaining would actually worry about their own classrooms and not rules that help the main office area function, test scores would improve.

  3. Don't must high schools have those rules. A friend of mine teachers in Dunellen High School and she says basically no is allowed in the back and it makes sense. To much confidential information and valuables are being taken care of and that the secretaries are ultimately responsible for these things. Seems more like a few teachers and maybe some board members are upset that they don't have inside information anymore. Maybe that's a good thing.

Actually, that is not true. I love how people try to paint the teachers as bad people in this town!

First, if anyone is unhappy with the "new rules", it is a few people in the building and those same people would be unhappy if they were given a million dollars.

Second, teachers have always had to "sign in" upon arrival for work.

Third, the mail room is just that, a mail room. Teachers have not been denied access to their mailboxes. They are now required to actually use the key for the mailbox and retrieve mail from the door on the mailbox. Anything that is needed from the mail room is now accessible to teachers in the main office.

I love how a blanket statement is made about teachers. Why not actually ask the teachers? There's a concept!

For one thing, this teacher is not upset at all by the "new rules" that Mr. Negron has enforced.

Maybe if the those that do not like change would stop complaining and actually worry about other things, like making sure the students in their classrooms are prepared to enter the world, there would not be such a hatred for teachers!

  5. Signing in at a counter is different from going behind a counter. If the high school was originally constructed with mailboxes needing keys, wouldn't that mean that the high school was originally designed so teachers wouldn't have to go behind counters and just get their mail from the hall? Just a logical thought.
Point of fact: Most of "us" don't hate teachers, just of few of their peers' sense of entitlement, that they are in control of management and then have trouble relating to the children on a human level. Most teachers are very hardworking and could care less about the day to day silly adolescent actions of a few regardless what side is crying now.

  6. SPEA Wins!! Congrads on winning your fight for justice and the American way. As soon as T.M. is back D.J. can have full reign of the office again. How exciting it must be to fight so hard for something and win. Imagine what you could do with that much effort with your teaching.
