South Plainfield is buzzing about the idea to move the library to the Roosevelt Administration Building...with some in favor and others opposed. This before the idea is even a formal proposal.

Another good question is to ask the Board of Education if ALL of them knew about this proposal before the Shared Services Committee talked about it and what their opinions are.
ReplyDeleteWho cares about who spoke to whom and who knew something before someone else did? How petty.
ReplyDeleteLet's discuss the idea itself rather than who's whose feathers are ruffled by whom. Too many egos.
Great idea, let's discuss it. How about the sagging floors in the record room, the falling plaster in the stair wells (it doesn't go away, been like that for decades, no amount of repair ever lasts), the age of the building, the limited parking since the first floor of the new addition would stay with the BOE including Future Stars, the handicap accessibility, the electrical and air conditioning upgrades, a sprinkler system to protect against fire, and the security needs in a multi-floor facility, and, how much would it cost to bring the building up to standards. To add another question or two...who pays to up grade the library building to handle the BOE needs, and is that building even big enough to take care of the people who would need to be in it, who pays for the move, which would be massive in both directions. There is no room for a meeting facility so a remote location would have to be used for all board meetings. Just a few questions there.
ReplyDeleteAll good questions, but I've seen old buildings beautifully refurbished all over the place, and they seem to be able to overcome all the types of things you mention.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying it will work or won't...or that it's a good idea or a bad idea. I, for one, would at least like to see some discussion and investigation to see if it's feasible.
Too bad the library board (composed of mostly hardcore Dems) won't even talk about the idea. They want to make it into a political issue, them and Butrico. They think they are the only ones allowed to have any say in this town...so much smarter than the rest of us mortals. The Library Prez's refusal to even meet with anyone else is typical of their arrogance.
The mayor formed a committee to study all ideas for a location of the library. How arrogant are the members of the shared services committee(all Reps by the way) that they are not willing to participate in the process? They believe that anyone who does not immediately embrace their position is a political foe. That is why discussion has become a lost art in South Plainfield. Let shared services submit their idea to the library committee like anyone else and hopefully the best solution willbe found.
ReplyDeleteWhy do we even need a library? Plainfield has a beautiful one. Piscataway and Edison have several. It seems most people in this town don't want to fund one anyway so why not put that up to vote. The sad part is I bet it would be a very close vote. The majority would rather save money, than have a town library. Very sad the direction we are going. At least the New Market Ave extension is complete. Not!
ReplyDeleteWrong. There are independents and even a Dem committee member on the shared services committee.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what process? And who decides what the "process" is, Butrico? No committee has been formed. He says he's gonna form one (unilaterally of couse) but has not done it. So what's the big deal about talking over some ideas in the meantime?
The town should build the rescue squad a new building in the lot they purchased next to the SP funeral home. Then on the existing land of the library and current squad, build a new bigger library. (If the town owns the squad property)
ReplyDeleteLibrary in a school actually sounds like a responsible affordable way to upgrade if there is room. Hopefully this is the start of responsible conversation that is not party motivated.
