272 Units Approved for Celebrations

The Planning Board last night approved an application to build 272 multi-family housing units (apartments and condos) on the site of the old Tingley Rubber factory.  The project, known as Celebrations, was originally supposed to be restricted to those 55 and over, but a new law passed last summer allowed the owners to come back and seek to remove the age restriction.

The vote to approve the project was 6-3, with board members Bill Thomas, Paul Grzenda, and Mary Beth Khidre voting against the plan.

Mayor Charles Butrico, Councilman Franky Salerno, and former Mayor Dan Gallagher voted "yes," as did board members John Papanastasiou, Jack Pederson, and John Mocharski.

07080 tried to contact the mayor and councilman by e-mail for comments regarding the decision.  No response has been recieved as of yet.

  1. Good to know 300 or more children will be moving into town. Thanks planning board. Maybe some sidewalks will finally go in for Durham Ave. I'm sure we are not charging the builder to have any sidewalks built along Tingley Road.

  2. Three members with connections to Jack Morris and a realtor voted for this increase. What a surprise. I hope they have to move into an industrial area with no sidewalks, many kids, unguarded train crossings, and major bus repair and trucking terminals nearby.

  3. Good for the NO votes. Gallagher was always a yes vote for the BIG MONEY boys. Another JM/DG project.

  4. This project will also include 10% low income families as well as 10% Moderate income families. These will be larger units for more people. Bussing will be needed and more Municipal services for this group.

  5. Just wondering... since the state has cut aid to our school district, will the builder also be paying for the additional teachers/possible additional school that might be needed on that side of town? What is the planning board thinking about? Not a good decision for our town.

  6. No sidewalks, no accountability, but I'm sure certain people will still get paid. The tax payers will get to pay the bill for you. Thanks Dems. Even without control you still get your buddies money! I guess we better vote Mike to keep your power in place. Where's an independent when you need one!

  7. Again, adding more citizens and cutting more services. I used to defend this town tooth and nail, but it's safe to say it's time to get out. It's turning into a real joke. So sad.

  8. The low and moderate income housing is all age restricted housing. The site is split between condos and townhouses.

  9. The housing will also bring in much needed revenue along with it. It is not just a take situation.

  10. Apartments take in services more than they pay in taxes. It's well documented.

  11. Much needed revenue?! Great make some nickles now and spend money dollars later. Oh wait, you mean revenue for Morris and Company. Thanks for letting me look at it from another angle. I forgot how much he donates to political causes.

  12. Its great to know that the south side is sacrificed again for money because traffic isn't bad enough just getting to 287. A handful of people get a handful of dollars to fill their pockets. Its good that they count on only 13% of the local population to vote. So please community keep doing what's right for the passive poor: don't vote and keep thieves in power and losers move into town. Just complain on websites and don't educate yourselves. With that in mind I will vote Tuesday and in favor of the school budget. I will not let our town die after how far its come just for pride. Education matters. Push your state reps for a new constitution so that the courts can't just give Abbott districts money for having stupid kids! Or vote no and encourage people who don"t care about education or family values to move in because its cheaper than neighbors and then cause problems in town. After that cry that someone broke into your house. The Observer would love to print your story once that happens. Your Choice! You get what you pay for. Let the haters respond!

  13. I agree that this and any new building without sidewalks and thoughts of the future are not wise.

  14. Maybe the schools can sell off all the ball fields since they won't need them anymore. I'm sure land like that, close to schools, will bring in much needed revenue. Somebody call the Dems & Morris I'm sure they're ready to buy.
