School Tax Could Increase 4%

South Plainfield taxpayers could see an increase in their tax bills based upon a vote by the Board of Education tonight.  The Board voted to introduce a budget with a four percent tax increase, which would raise taxes by eleven points, or about $135 on the average home.

Despite the increase, the budget includes more than two dozen staff reductions, as well as cuts in sports and extracurricular activities.  Board members say that the tentative proposal also includes eliminating summer school and the adult high school.

The vote was 6-2 in favor of the tentative budget, with board members Debbie Boyle and Robert Jones voting against the proposal.

According to one member, the Board will be meeting over the next two weeks to try to trim the budget further.
