It is a sad state of affairs when a struggling school district has to move backwards instead of forwards. No leadership. Poor morale.
ReplyDeleteWhy bring back people who retired? What is the point? Education is on a slippery slope, why not try to resolve the problems?
I can only imagine what working in the high school will be like now that the VP of the union and her husband are working in tandem. Smells like a conflict of interest.
The entire Board needs to be removed from office, as well as their "appointments" to positions so that South Plainfield can move forward in this crumbling education system.
Guarini jumped ship. Cella is jumping ship. Who is next? Does the Board have enough money to hire interim principals in all the schools? How about interim teachers?
Might as well move from South Plainfield now, before the property values plummet!
Bad move BOE! I guess this meeting was not about the kids!
How about let the administration currently in place at the high school run the show while you actively search for a leader for the high school. You have spent four months jockeying an interim. That time could have been better spent actually hiring someone to lead the high school.
Look's like the BOE now will have to find a permenant Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Business Administrator, High School Principal, and Supervisor of Technology. Oh and an interim assistant principal for the high school, for the maternity leave. Who would want to come to this district now?
PP's district isn't struggling. NJ Monthly has Dunellen High School ranked as the 9th most improved school in state. He must be doing somethin right.
ReplyDeleteDunellen must have been pretty far down on the list to start to have such an increase and still not be near the top. Glad after all the years of slipping Dunellen improved some. Probably the new high school principal and a restricted main office that they have had something to do with it.
ReplyDeleteGlad that I did not follow my families advice and become a teacher , especially after reading some of these comments . What bitter people ! You sound like passed over job seekers or people who will conjure any conspiracy theory whether it is supported by facts or not . The BOE rids the town of a Superintendent who is hurting the district and you complain .
ReplyDeleteA guy comes out of retirement to help and offers to donate 30% of his salary and you complain . Some people just cannot be satisfied and always want others to do more while they do nothing but complain .

Nothing like bringing in a bunch of washed up administrators to move the district forward...way to go BOE! Thanks for looking out for our kids. Now we have essentially no valid leadership in the district because the Board didn't like the way they were being communicated with. JG is the biggest joke I have seen in a long time. “We need a superintendent in the district,” School Board President Jim Giannakis said. “We have no choice. It’s something that has to happen.” What should have happened is Mr. Negron should have stayed on until the end of the year (saving nearly $100,000 being spent paying Bowen), a younger principal with new ideas should have been put in place at the high school to take the place of Dr. M (could have saved another $30,000 there) and you might not have lost Dr. Cella and Mr. Guarini which could have helped stabilize the district. But JG said it had to be done because he wasn't getting his way. Just be sure to apologize to the teachers and aides you have to cut in the Spring because you don't have any money after all of this nonsense. How about you focus on running a fiscally sound school system that actually takes into account teaching and learning and worry less about getting your old buddies some per diem work? Time to clean house at the Board of Ed!
ReplyDeleteHow ill informed and unaware you are. Good riddance to the useless super, ass't and BA. Massaro is hands down the best choice to provide leadership and continuity, thank you, BOE for making that choice. I hope SN will fill in as an ass't principal, he gets the job done and knows our district, and he was the principal for all the current HS student when they were in MS, perfect choice. Have you ever attended a meeting or read the minutes? You are speaking is support of people who have done nothing for us, even held us back, and bad mouthing capable and knowledgeable administrators. I am very encouraged by these recent actions, I think we are on the right track.
ReplyDeleteI think you have no clue what it takes to run a school yet you blindly support the single dumbest concept in public education, paying two superintendents! I guess you have no problem taking money from the classroom and spending it on temporary replacements when the Board is the one who gave Negron his contract in the first place. I read all the minutes and I know the biggest thing blocking progress is the Board. I am not a supporter of Negron or any of the others but I am less of a supporter of wasting money on retirees. Obviously you are a Massaro fan and good for you but we have no use for replacement help. We need people put in place long-term, it is the only way to get out of this mess the Board is creating. What do you propose we do when they decide to leave again? We'll be right back where we started. If you're OK spending that kind of money on interims then you are the one who is unaware. I would rather spend that money on resources for my kids and their teachers not on a political game. If you really believe this is the best time to pay someone to stay home then you my friend are the one who is clearly ill-informed.
ReplyDeleteI am neither a "Massaro fan" nor am I your friend. In the absence of a HS principal, the smartest move is to make a seamless transition during a true search for a permanent replacement. (Unlike Negron's sham of a search/interview process) You cannot deny Massaro's experience and knowledge. As far as Negron, best to cut our losses because he was becoming harmful to the education process. Initially, he underperformed, recently he made decisions or lack of decisions that could negatively impact our children. Negron was the one blocking progress, along with a few of his BOE supporters who have recently "seen the light." It's time to get serious and put the right people in place, the BOE got it right, this time.
ReplyDeleteI am not defending Negron by any means. But the Board knew of the retirement of the HS principal before the end of last school year and they did nothing to bring someone in over the summer except fight with Negron...so no, the Board did not get this one right. They furthered the problem by putting Negron in as the HS principal (if he couldn't run the district, why would you want him running the HS). Now they go and put him on leave and cost the schools more money. These vacancies and leave placements should have been addressed over the summer not during the school year, that would have been seamless. This is a disaster and is in effect wasting a year at the expense of the students and a lot of money. I am not questioning Massaro's experience or knowledge, and I am not defending Negron. I am simply stating that this is not the time to make and plug holes in the administration. They dropped the ball and now all they are doing is kicking it around. The right people are not replacements that are being paid by the day. The students, parents, and staff deserve to have consistent leadership in place and this simply is not the answer. This all could have been avoided and now we are going to convince ourselves that this is the best solution???? If you truly believe that then perhaps they could make room for one more on the Board because you sound just like them.
ReplyDeleteAll you complainers re the BOE will have your chance for change come April 2011. You can get out and vote for the candidate of your choice. And you can even run for a seat on the BOE yourself. So be brave, stand behind your complaints..get out there and vote for yourselves. Let's see what kind of bangup job you can do.
ReplyDeleteTo the poster who said the BOE dropped the ball by not acting immediately upon learning of Ken May's retirement, Negron is the one who dragged his feet. He did not interview on time, he did not present candidates to the board in a timely manner, he took days off and dragged his feet. The vacancies are a direct result of Negron's incompetence.
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher in SP, I can tell you that our schools could have used the WASTED money on classroom materials and supplies. We were told in September that there is no money left in our budget for anything we might need and we didn't receive all of our teaching materials that were ordered. It's kind of hard to follow the curriculum and state's standards when our materials were not ordered due to lack of funds. Yet we have over $100,000 to pay Negron to sit home. Bad decision, BOE.
ReplyDeleteFor once the board did the right thing for the district. Negron needed to be let go, he wasn't do anything that was helping our district. Unfortunately, we have to continue to pay his salary because of his contract. I think that if he had done his job in the first we wouldn't need an interim principal in the high school. But he was just being spiteful because his contract wasn't renewed. If he did his job we wouldn't be losing money like we are. So if people want to blame anyone for all the problems, it should be Negron. Too bad we can't sue him for neglectful duties as parents because he failed our kids!
ReplyDeleteThe Board hired Negron, when no other town wanted him, the Board gave him an additional, unnecessary raise, then openly tabled his appointments and then let Negron and other administrators know that any and all his recommendations would be turned down back in July. The Board thought they had a chump to push over and force any whim they had. Staff recommendations placed on hold whenever a board member had a friend or family member need or want a job and then courtesy interviews had to be held. Don't think for one moment only administration is short handed, but also the teaching staff. Once Negron stopped catering to the Board, the Board became upset and claimed he was ineffective. The same claim this Board has used about people in the past and will again in the future. The Board accused him and others of not doing their job all the while setting up for friends to make some extra money. Just amazing how smug Board Members are while blaming others in public, while they themselves and family members are still employed only because of their position on the Board. Imagine what they would have to do if this town wasn’t so lazy. Maybe this April they will actually have to have an election and not just find the first three warm bodies they need favors. It’s sad that they get an automatic appointment just because nobody else can bother to run. And no, I will not subject myself to the corruptness that is so apparent and prevalent.
