BOE Considers Fate of Embattled Superintendent

School-board members met behind closed doors Wednesday night to consider the fate of Superintendent of Schools Jose Negron.

Because Negron's contract ends June 30, 2011, the board has until June 30 this year to notify him whether it will renew him.  By law, the board must give him a year's notice if it chooses to let him go.

Negron has been the subject of intense criticism, especially over the handling of this year's schools budget.  In addition, school employees have questioned his management style, with several offering complaints about district operations at BOE meetings.

Negron has also provoked the ire of at least one board member, Debbie Boyle.  At last month's budget meeting when Negron publicly offered to take a pay freeze, Boyle shot back, asking whether he meant for the coming year or only if the board offered him a new contract.  When Negron said it was the latter, Boyle started to question the sincerity of the gesture but was quickly cut off by Board President Jim Giannakis and the board's legal counsel.

Board members have been tight lipped about the result of their meeting, and the board itself has not publicly announced any decision.

  1. I think it's time for Negron to go. He has proven that he doesn't care about the district but only his wallet!

  2. I agree! Negron has shown over and over again that he doesnt care about our students, schools, or town. He is dishonest and cannot be trusted. He doesnt attend any activities at any of the schools and never shows his support for the kids. Why would we want him to be our educational leader!

  3. Negron should be given a new contract, he has to work with a board who only has their interest in mind not the community. One only needs to see the nepotism and conflict of interests in this district. No superintendent can do their job with this board.

  4. Dont be fooled! He is just as bad as the board. He only has his own interest in mind and clearly doesnt care about our kids or this town. The board is bad, but he is worse!!!!

  5. If he had our interests in mind and cared about our kids the budget would not have been done so teachers would lose their jobs!

  6. And the budget decisions wouldn't have been withheld until the very last minute, having teachers notified of their termination by meeting minutes.

If there is a worse way that he could have handled the past two months, I can't think of what it could be.

  7. Do any of you know the law? May 15th is the date of notification. I can see fine hand at work here once again. If you can't get your dirty work done openly, try innuendo anonymously.

  8. Should of never let Chuck Ford go. Get him back. Oh and get rid of the arrogant Byrne lady

  9. Does the law preclude him/you from executing your duties with compassion and common decency?

How about a letter of termination before the public meeting?

Or is it fun to have non-tenured people scouring the rehire list publicly, praying that they're name is on it?

  10. This couldn't get renewals in his previous appointments. He was allowed to leave early from his previous district to go to South Plainfield. I can't believe that this board would actually be willing to pay this guy more money to stay when every where else asked him to go. Even the voters are asking for him to go. See the writing on the wall and try someone new for less.

  11. How can anyone justify paying Mr. Negron $180,000 and the Governor $175,000.00?! Enough said!

  12. Carol Byrne, you so vigorously "stand by your man" Negron, what has he brought to this district? What is his plan to better our schools, our scores, etc? As far as I've seen, he's just a suit.

  13. I see no reason why there can't be one superintendent for each county. Why does every district need one? Have each district administrator report to the county superintendent. Big savings with minimal loss.

What has this guy done for the good of the district since he got here? Let's see:
Started school early for Channel One, not working!
Didn't inform parents properly during one of the High School Lock Downs! Angered parents unnecessarily.
Sent kids to school on ice skates because of horrible weather! Some fell and were hurt.
Same staff of teachers and principals since he arrived, but test scores are lower. Higher scores with Rosado, same people must be the leadership.
Ordered school supplies then ordered them to be sent back because it was “expensive”! Cost taxpayers money, time and aggravation.
Never seen at school events or important council meetings! Guess the job really is 9-5.
Seems a number of board member over the last 2 years have complained about him not informing them, even lying to them, but they are willing to give him an extension?
He didn’t pass on the letter from the council inviting the Board to budget meetings. As quoted by Mrs. Boyle in another article.

It seems this guy has an excuse every time and its never his fault directly. From what I have read it seems he sets people up to fail just so he can't be blamed.

All decisions must be his, so are the successes and failures. Someone please post some good he has done to change my mind. To pay this guy $180,000+ benefits seems silly.
Last Thought: Why do most districts have a superintendent with a Doctorate and ours doesn’t have one?

  16. The politics in this town is so ridiculously overboard. Negron's hands are so tied by the many many "ties" that the board members have with people vested in the system with ill or selfish intentions. If ANYONE should be investigated, it should be all of the BOE. There is just too much to say about all of the unbelievable corruption in South Plainfield to list here.

  17. Maybe we can get Gallon to run the schools...only joking. I have to say Negron has never impressed my as a parent and as a teacher. I have heard rumors that he was aware of Gallon's antics with allowing someone to use his address for attending school in our town. I hope that is being investigated. Let's hope that the board won't renew his contract and he can find another school district that needs his help. We need a leader that can effectively run our schools and take a stand to the BOE>
